Role Description

Police officers serve the community by enforcing local and state laws and protecting the public (and property). Police Officers with the St. Louis County Police Department are responsible for patrolling designated areas, responding to emergencies, enforcing laws, engaging with the community, and preparing detailed reports.


Many officers also provide community services like school presentations, awareness campaigns to educate the public about specific safety concerns, and they support national programs like D.A.R.E.


There are a vast number of roles within a police department. A career in law enforcement can lead to senior-level positions like Police Captain.

Education Requirements

  • Age: At least 21 years old by academy completion.

  • Citizenship: U.S. citizen

  • Education/Experience: One of the following:

    • 32 college semester credit hours with a minimum 2.0 GPA.

    • High school diploma/GED plus one year of full-time police experience, two years of active military service, or four years in the National Guard/Reserve.

    • Five years of continuous full-time work experience with positive performance reviews.

  • Physical Fitness: Meet department standards for height, weight, vision (correctable to 20/20), and overall physical condition.

  • Legal Record: No felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanors.

  • Driver's License: Valid license with five or fewer points.


The selection process includes a background check, physical fitness assessment, interviews, and other evaluations to ensure candidates are well-suited for the role.
